Vancouver's Westwood Plateau Golf Course Very Impressive!

by Scott A. Sumner
As a golfer growing up in Ontario I always dreamed of playing the game I love in a mountainous environment like British Columbia.  My dream came true on a recent trip to Vancouver when I got to play Westwood Plateau, a much recognized course having been voted the best new course in Canada along with many other awards.
Westwood Plateau is about a 45 minute drive from downtown Vancouver to Port Coquitlam.  It is part of a entire community built out of the side of a mountain.  "What's really unique about Westwood Plateau is the ownership company built this whole community.  The owners succeeded in branding the upscale community similar to West Vancouver.  The Westbild company owner is famous for his company, the Future Shop, which was recently sold to the  American company Best Buy.  The country club is an asset to the community, quite a high end area," states Eric Suzuki, Sales Manager for Westwood Plateau.  "In early 1990 the area was called street of dreams because all the homes were $1 million plus.  Our country club got built about five years later.  With that type of resident clientele we are a very high end facility and are able to have a high end clubhouse.  Westwood Plateau is the most expensive facility in Vancouver with a daily green fee of $159.00 which includes shared power cart, on-cart GPS, complimentary warm-up range, on-cart bottled water, continental breakfast before 12:00 and a tee gift."  The average is about $80 to $100.00 on a public play course.  There are no members at Westwood Plateau and they are moving their focus towards corporate events and public play.
image      "I look at golf as a destination experience.  When you come to Canada you expect a certain experience.  A flat course you can play that anywhere but a mountainous course is the terrain that Canada speaks of.  It adds scenic viewpoints," said Suzuki.  "Many awards have been achieved by Westwood Plateau.  We get many golfers from the US and other countries.  We are like a private course but were open to everyone,"
Westwood Plateau is  open from April to October.  The clubhouse stays open through out the year with weddings and Christmas events etc.  "We get little snow but can't open for a longer golf season because our elevation creates frost and difficulty grass cutting.  Westwood Plateau is open for six monthes of the year so the course is always in superb condition," states Suzuki.  There is also a golf academy with 5 instructors which is off site from the country club.  The facility has a nine hole executive course as well plus a great practice area.  They sell equipment with four different fitting systems: Calloway, Ben Hogan, Titelist and Ping as well as a club maker.  "We have one of the most extensive short game facilities in Canada.  The academy runs as a business on its own.  I think it makes us very diverse," says Suzuki.
Westwood Plateau has some other very unique features including the 19th Hole Personal Golf Concierge.  This office located in the 5 star Fairmount Waterfront in  downtown Vancouver allows golfers to find out about Westwood Plateau as well as other Vancouver area courses.  They can book their tee times and arrange transportation to the course.  Transportation can be in luxury SUVs or for the more adventurous by helicopter.  "We have a helicopter pad at Westwood Plateau and can do a transfer with clients from Canada Place.  You get there in 12 minutes from downtown instead of 45 minutes.  There is  a nice site seeing tour that ends with an areial view of the golf course . For a foursome it would cost $350 per person and that includes the golf as well," said Suzuki..

Westwood Plateau proved to be a very challenging layout with some spectacular holes that required a very accurate tee shot.  The greens were in perfect shape and rolled true.  The electric carts had a very elaborate GPS system which was helpful to your game.  Most noticeable were the very friendly and helpful staff in great numbers around the course, complete with a person at the 18th green to clean your clubs.  It all added up to a superb golf experience that made you want to book your next tee time at Westwood Plateau as soon as possible.
