Paul Stokaluk Shoot Out A Thunder Bay Tradition
by Scott A. Sumner
As the golf season winds down each year in Northwestern Ontario you can count on the Annual Paul Stokaluk Memorial Shoot-Out held at the Municipal Golf Course. Paul Stokaluk was the golf professional at Municipal for many years and his family members have keep the name of their father through the annual tournament which will be No 13 this October 8th, 2006.
Last fall I was lucky enough to play golf with organizer Tony Stokaluk during one of his practice rounds at Whitewater Golf Club for the Thunder Bay District Amateur. That day he shot an easy 72 and I saw first hand the golf skills synominous with the Stokaluk name.
Incidently Tony Stokaluk won the 12th Annual Paul Stokaluk Shoot Out over final challenger Barry Caland for his second victory in the event. The 9 hole match play event brings together 11 golfers who have qualified through appoints system in the TBDGA tournaments that year. They can also be a family invitee. The game is a 9 hole knock out with the highest scoring player eliminated each hole until the final two compete on the 9th. It is an exciting event to see and last year was played in beautiful sunny warm weather.
"The shootout is something the family started in 1994. We thought it was a great idea, unique and we have taken it and ran with it. We want to honour my father who was a nice guy and a good golfer and have people not forget him.' notes Tony Stokaluk.
Be sure to get out to this years event October 8 and see part of Thunder Bay golf tradition.
