Hank Wilke Wins Thunder Bay District Amateur
by Scott A. Sumner
The 2016 Thunder Bay District Amateur was an exciting event with a dramatic 3 hole playoff that had 58 year old Hank Wilke win over 24 year old Brett Shewchuk.
Hank Wilke, age 58
“ I didn’t think it would be possible to win but I had one of those rounds where everything went right on the back nine. The front wasn’t so great. I made some putts and chips, hit the ball really well and am quite happy with that. I felt relaxed when I made the birdies on the back nine because Brett was 5 shots up coming into the last 9 holes. I felt I had nothing to lose but the next thing you know you are only 2 behind.”
“ I pulled the driver on 18 and I say every time I lay up I screw up, so I figured I could keep it going. There was one mechanical thing that makes me leak it to the right side and is part of the pressure
coming down 18. We all go through that at some times. The more you play the more you get a feel for the shots. That is the challenge, having the energy to come out and play all the time.”
Brett Shewchuk, age 24
“ I played fine but Hank was just on fire pretty much the last 10 holes minus 18. He made 5 birdies in 10 holes and I played it 2 over. He made a great par the second time on 18 in the playoff. My swing on 17 was just a bad swing. I was just trying to be aggressive. ”
Brett will be going to Niagara College this fall and playing on the golf team there.
