by Scott A.Sumner
Nipigon native Colin Sobey, who now lives in Thunder Bay, won his first tournament ever in Thunder Bay and it was the biggest amateur event of the year!

Previously his only other golf tournament win was the Nipigon club championship.
“ This victory means a lot, my first win in Thunder Bay. We also had a baby two weeks ago today so this victory is for him, Beckett. Playing with two guys like Barry Caland and Robert Cummings the last round, you are going to grip the clubs a little harder because those guys have won every event you can think of here,” said Colin Sobey. “ Coming down the stretch they did nothing but encourage me. I took  I had a bad hole on no.12 taking a 10 here at Whitewater, but I just blocked it out and starting thinking about the holes to come. I had a small lead left but played well the last holes to win. It is golf. “
“ I coped with my nerves by deep breathing and focusing on what Barry and Robert did on the holes because I didn’t have the honours after 12. I hit the greens in regulation and pars helped me on the way in.“ Winning this major is huge for me. I play a lot of golf at Centennial in the men’s club and they send me encouraging messages all the time.”

Colin started playing competitive  golf at age 21 and is 35 now.

“ My girlfriend said get out and play after us having a baby 2 weeks ago so I came out and hit balls here at Whitewater and then Chapples and it felt good being out here. I shot 71 at Chapples and yesterday in
the fog at Strathcona, 68 so everything worked well. This is huge confidence for me.”
Colin will now play in the Ontario Amateur and do the best he can for Thunder Bay and his hometown of Nipigon.
