Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open
We are pleased to announce the Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open at the Whitewater Golf Club, Thunder Bay, Ontario July 13 - 17, 2011 and followed by July 12 - 16, 2012 and July 10 - 14, 2013. The event proceeds will go to the Alan Thomas Sumner Foundation to support
junior golf in NW Ontario as well as other activities to benefit people in the name of Barbara Patricia Sumner.
“ The Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open would assist in promoting our community to the world. It would certainly bring people here that have never been here before and hopefully enjoy the hospitality that both Thunder Bay and Whitewater will provide for them. Hopefully they will come back and visit both Thunder Bay and Whitewater and all the other tourism attractions. Together with the “ Fort William Historical Park” these are world class attractions that we have that nobody really knows exist. I think this golf event would help the people of Thunder Bay.”
Silvio DiGregorio, President of Whitewater Golf Club

The biggest plus for this event would be the fantastic, championship Whitewater Golf Course ( a 7300 yard Tom McBroom design) which would certainly be good for both players and spectators alike. It will offer exceptional view points for golf enthusiasts and a
definite challenge for the 156 professional golfers from around North America who will be here to compete. They will be members of the Ontario PGA, Manitoba PGA and Minnesota PGA. In additional all those that feel they can compete will have the chance to enter and win the
first prize of $10,000 plus
Event Profile
The Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open will be hosted by the Whitewater Golf Club, designed by Thomas McBroom for the first year July, 2011.
The local host organizing committee, under the leadership of Executive Chair Scott Sumner, intends to create the success of this event over the next 3 years. This year the prestigious event will take place July 14th to July 17th. The actual tournament will run Thursday July 15th – Sunday July 17th, 2011.
Event Background
The Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open will host an independent professional event at the Whitewater Golf Club in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This event will give the golfers of Thunder Bay, Northwestern Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Manitoba the opportunity to see a high level 3 round professional golf event at the world class Whitewater Golf Club, designed by top Canadian Architect Tom McBroom and open since July of 2004. The event will feature a full week of activities including practice rounds, Pro Am were the public can play with a professional, Junior, Women and Men’s golf Clinic’s as well as 3 rounds of championship play with the prise purse being $50,000 plus
Thunder Bay has 10 excellent golf courses and offers the potential to attract the travelling golfer from proximate markets in NW Ontario, Manitoba, the midwest US and beyond. The Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open will provide an opportunity to showcase the area to a broad audience The purpose of the event will be to showcase Thunder Bay as a tremendous outdoor city with much to offer the visitor including golf activities. The completion of the $25
million Whitewater Golf Club development has definitely positioned Thunder Bay as a world class golf destination. The three year time frame of the Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open will go along way towards showcasing the potential of Thunder Bay and area. The
adjoining Northern part of the state of Minnesota is also fortunate to have several high level golf courses fairly close to Thunder Bay. Superior National at Lutsen, Giants Ridge with 2 courses The Legend and The Quarry at Biwabik as well as Fortune Bay at Tower MN and
many others represent a great golf offering to the travelling golfer especially from Minneapolis. The goal is to attract these golfers to make the crossing into Canada to experience some great golf and hospitality.
The Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open has been in the planning stages since mid July 2009. The Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open will be a three year project that will build each year and put Thunder Bay on the golfing map. Our goal is to start the event with a purse of $50,000, and then build to $75,000 in the second year and $100,000 in the third year. We also plan to increase the activities in the event to include two pro ams in the week attracting more out of town golfers and sponsors of the event as well as increase community involvement to increase the festival approach. Once the first years’s event happens it will be easier to attract more corporate sponsors and offer more concrete evidence of how the
event has become successful with the local organization ability and the superb nature of the venue.
Our Target Markets will be Thunder Bay, Northwestern Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Manitoba and beyond. The Thunder Bay market has tremendous accessibility in terms of airlines with Air Canada, West Jet, Porter, Delta and Bearskin Airlines. For instance the market of Chicago is easily accessible to Thunder Bay by Porter Airlines at a very reasonable airfare. We anticipate working closely with media sponsors as well as other attractions such as the Fort William Historical Park to purchase media and create publicity for the event. We will be spearheading complete packages for the event including airfare if needed, hotel, golf and restaurants for the visitor. The media and publicity will provide positive exposure for
Thunder Bay and area with a well known international event that showcases our ability to compete with much larger urban centers. It will present the opportunity to publicize the new vibrant, academic and high technology economy of a changing city of Thunder Bay.
Thunder Bay is and continues to become the regional centre of Northwestern Ontario. The Alan Thomas Sumner Whitewater Open will be held in the municipality of Oliver Paipoonge and attract visitors form the entire Northwestern Ontario community to both attend and
volunteer at the event. Golf is a stong activity in all the surrounding smaller communities of Northwestern Ontario which all have their own local golf courses. We hope to bring new people to the region who may not only love golf but enjoy other activities such as fishing, hiking, camping out, canoeing, mountain biking and other outdoor activities especially attractive in a pristine northern setting. We will work with local and regional tourism industry
partners to develop the ability to capitalize on the presence of some new visitors to the area in the broader region.
The event will require some 100 volunteers throughout the weeks events. Volunteers will get a free Shirt and Cap, plus 1 green pass for Whitewater. The admission fee of $5 per day or weekly at $10 will ensure everyone will be able to attend and see some world class golf!
The golf professional will travel from the southern Ontario area, Manitoba and Minnesota areas. They will pay an entry fee of $375 each which will be repaid as part of the purse in total. We will accept the first 156 players in the event. An amateur can participate if their handicap is under 4. The prize purse will also be increased by the tournament organizers to ensure at least a prize purse of $50,000 with a $10,000 first place. The professionals will have the
chance to participate in the Pro Am and earn $200. The event will offer special airfare rates from Porter Airlines as well as hotel accommodation from th Valhalla Inn.
There will be a Pro Am event on July14th where up to 40 teams of 3 people and a professional will compete for prizes followed by a Opening Dinner. The Pro Am cost per person will be $250. A practice round is available on July 13th. The 40 acre two sided range practice facility will be open throughout the event. There will be a concert event on site on Friday night.
